Located in the heart of Detroit, Sun China offers an inviting gateway to authentic Chinese flavors with a focus on takeout convenience. This beloved Chinese restaurant and takeout spot at 16921 Telegraph Rd is well-known for delivering a fresh, flavorful dining experience that keeps locals coming back for more.
Sun China’s menu is a vibrant tapestry of classic Chinese favorites and generous portions that satisfy both solo diners and large families. Popular dishes such as the Sweet and Sour Combo and General TSO feature perfectly battered, crispy chicken pieces enveloped in sauces that balance sweet, tangy, and spicy notes with appetite-awakening precision. The Won Ton Soup provides a warm, comforting start—a delicate broth with tender dumplings that tease your palate with every spoonful.
Seafood lovers will appreciate the fresh, succulent Shrimp Fried Rice and the thoughtfully prepared Fried Shrimp, both staples praised for their generous shrimp portions and flavorful seasoning. For those craving savory richness, the Almond Chicken Fried Rice and the combo of Almond Chicken with BBQ Ribs bring together contrasting textures and deep, satisfyingly smoky flavors.
Beef enthusiasts are not left out, with standouts like the Beef with Broccoli, Mongolian Beef, and Szechuan Beef showcasing tender cuts cooked with layers of aromatic garlic and spices. The wide variety of lo mein options—from chicken to deluxe beef, shrimp, and chicken—add a comforting noodle dish that is both hearty and flavorful.
While the restaurant’s atmosphere leans towards practical and unpretentious—dimly lit and designed to accommodate a steady flow of carryout customers—it is the food that truly shines here. Many customers note the freshness and substantial portions as the key draws, with Simone Love highlighting Sun China as “one of the best Chinese restaurants” due to its consistently hot and flavorful offerings. This is a place where each dish is crafted to satisfy cravings with quality ingredients and genuine care.
IVary diners appreciate the sizable, bite-friendly chicken pieces featured in dishes like the sesame and Szechuan specialties, making every bite a delight of texture and flavor. It’s also worth noting that Sun China’s users recommend double-checking orders to ensure accuracy, as mix-ups can happen in busy times but the staff remains attentive.
Though some foodies have wished for a touch more spice—such as Shubhashree Limaye’s note on the Szechuan chicken—the overall dining experience remains an inviting mix of comforting tradition and authentic tastes. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or bringing home a family feast, Sun China invites you to enjoy a dependable Chinese culinary journey in Detroit that’s worth every call and every bite.
One of the best Chinese restaurants I have had the food is always FRESH flavorful HOT , everything my family and I order is always so good, worth the busy phone Call Back Worth the wait It's Made Fresh 8/10 recommend
Food is generally tasty and good portions for the price, but the schezuan chicken lacks any type of spice. I would like to try again
There was no atmosphere, dimly lit, chairs and booth to accommodate waiting carry-out customers. I considered the food okay as I have had better, however the shrimp fried rice was the best of all. The shrimp in the rice was large and fresh. The sweet and sour sauce was evenly tasted. However I was not fond of yellow gravy which is not gravy, more like gelatin with a chickeny flavor for the Almond chicken. Wings average. Portions good. I did not taste the egg rolls. But they were complimented by the person who ate them chicken and shrimp in the roll. Other patrons in the establishment loved the place and stated they are return patrons. I will be returning for shrimp fried rice and maybe try something else. Maxx
The food, the food, the food. Instead of getting tiny pieces of diced chicken, Sun gives you large bite sizes pieces on your sesame,Szechuan dishes. The meal are very good and enough for 2 if you want to share. $$ But my last visit they gave me the wrong someone else order. So check your food. Or ask them to double check it.
